Maybe this sounds familiar.

You check your phone before you check whether you're still breathing.
You replay last week's conversation. You rehearse next week's. You're never actually in the one happening now.
Weekends have no rest in them. You laugh at jokes half a second late.
From the outside, life looks fine. Inside, there's a low hum of worry that never switches off.

You're not broken. You're just lost in your own head.

And that's good news — because you can find your way out of your head. You don't have to quit your job, move to the mountains, or become a different person.

Peace isn't on a mountain. It's in traffic, in meetings, in the kitchen sink.

The Monk of the Streets is Nguyen Thanh's true story — from a breakdown nobody noticed to a quiet, solid kind of peace, found not in a temple but in an ordinary working life.
Along the way, an old man who sells tea on a street corner shares the same truths the Buddha, Lao Tzu, and Jesus pointed to — in plain words you can test this week, on your own commute.

No religion. No cushion. No hour-long sessions.

You won't be asked to believe anything. Every practice in this book takes a minute or two and fits inside a normal working day.

It was a Tuesday. I remember because Tuesdays were the day of the weekly report, and the weekly report was the thing I had been dreading since Sunday afternoon.
I drove into the basement of our building at eight minutes to eight. I found a space, which was lucky. I turned off the engine. And then I did not move.

About the author

Nguyen Thanh is not a monk. For most of his adult life, he worked in an office — a desk by a window that didn't open, a manager who emailed at eleven at night, a phone checked before breakfast.
When his life quietly fell apart on the inside, he didn't leave for a monastery. He started paying attention — in traffic, in meetings, and at a small tea stall on a street corner.
A colleague once caught him standing very still in the office pantry, watching the kettle boil, and laughed: "Look at you. The monk of the streets." It was meant as a joke. It became the title of this book.
"I do not want you to think that what is in this book belongs to someone else. It belongs to you, sitting where you are, tired in the way you are tired."

Questions readers ask

Is this a religious book?

No. It draws on the Buddha, Lao Tzu, Jesus, and Zen teachers, but it belongs to no religion. You won't be asked to convert, chant, or believe anything you can't test in your own life.

I've never meditated. Is that a problem?

Not at all. The author tried a meditation app once and quit after four days. The practices here happen with your eyes open, in the middle of an ordinary day.

How much time do the practices take?

Most take a minute or two — at a red light, before you open your email, while you brush your teeth.

Is it a true story?

Yes. The Monk of the Streets is Nguyen Thanh's own story, told alongside the teachings that helped him.

Can I read it on my phone?

Kindle books can be read on the free Kindle app for iPhone, Android, tablet, or computer — you don't need a Kindle device.

Can I buy it in the UK or Australia?

Yes. Tap "Get My Copy" and choose your country — you'll go straight to your local Amazon store.

What if I change my mind?

Purchases and refunds are handled by the retailer under its own return policy.

Is this book a substitute for therapy?

No. It shares personal experience and contemplative practice. If you're struggling, please also talk to a doctor, a counselor, or someone you trust.

The street is your temple. It always was.

You don't need to go to the mountains. You only need to be where you are — fully, as often as you can remember.
This book shows you how, one ordinary moment at a time.
